SSB GTO Tasks —
Complete Guide to Group Testing Officer Activities
Understand all GTO tasks, how they are conducted, and how candidates are evaluated in group settings during SSB.
Built for serious defence aspirants preparing for SSB interviews
What are GTO Tasks in SSB?
GTO tasks are conducted on Days 3 and 4 of SSB and form one of the three core assessment streams — alongside Psychology Tests and the Personal Interview. They are overseen by the Group Testing Officer and are designed to observe how candidates behave and perform in real group environments.
Unlike written tests, GTO tasks require physical and mental participation simultaneously. Candidates must plan, communicate, cooperate, and lead — often under time pressure and with limited resources. These tasks reveal Officer Like Qualities that are difficult to demonstrate on paper.
The tasks span both indoor sessions (Group Discussion, GPE, Lecturette) and outdoor obstacle activities (PGT, HGT, IO, Command Task, FGT), giving assessors a broad view of each candidate across varied contexts.
Conducted on Day 3 and Day 4
Focus on group behaviour and leadership
Includes both indoor and outdoor tasks
Structure of GTO Tasks
Nine distinct tasks assessed across two days
GD
Group Discussion
Candidates discuss social or current affairs topics in a group. Assesses communication quality, awareness, listening ability, and whether candidates can influence others without dominating.

GPE
Group Planning Exercise
A map-based situation is presented. The group must analyse the problem, discuss solutions, and agree on a plan. Evaluates structured thinking, decision-making, and collective problem-solving.

PGT
Progressive Group Tasks
An outdoor obstacle course requiring the group to use limited resources to cross structures. Tasks increase in difficulty progressively. Assesses planning, initiative, and cooperative execution.

GOR
Group Obstacle Race
Candidates write about themselves from five perspectives — what parents, teachers, friends, the candidate themselves, and the SSB assessor think of them. This test assesses self-awareness, honesty, and personality consistency.

HGT
Half Group Task
Identical in format to PGT but conducted in smaller groups. This allows the GTO to observe each candidate more closely and assess individual contribution to the group effort.
Explore Now
IO
Individual Obstacles
Each candidate individually attempts a series of physical obstacles numbered by difficulty. Scored on the number and difficulty of obstacles completed. Assesses physical fitness, courage, and determination.

LEC
Lecturatte
Each candidate selects a topic from four options and delivers a 3-minute talk to the group. Assesses knowledge, clarity of expression, confidence in front of others, and body language.

CT
Command Task
Each candidate is given the role of commander and must lead two subordinates to complete an obstacle task. Directly evaluates leadership ability, planning, and confidence in directing others.

FGT
Final Group Task
A final outdoor group obstacle task conducted after all individual and group tasks. Serves as an opportunity to reassess and confirm observations. Natural improvement or regression is noted.

What is Assessed in GTO Tasks
The GTO assesses candidates holistically across all tasks. Individual performance in any single task carries less weight than the overall pattern of behaviour observed across the full two-day session.
Leadership and initiative in group settings
Teamwork and willingness to cooperate
Communication clarity and active listening
Confidence and influence within the group
Practical problem-solving ability
Physical stamina and determination under pressure
How GTO Evaluation Works
Evaluation is not based on task results alone — the GTO builds a personality profile from observed behaviour across all tasks combined.
Continuous Observation
The GTO does not assess individual moments in isolation. Behaviour is tracked across all tasks over two days to build a complete and reliable personality profile.
Group vs Individual Balance
Both collective contribution and individual initiative matter. Being a strong team player and showing independent leadership at the right moments are both expected.
Natural Behaviour Matters
Rehearsed or performed actions are visible to trained assessors. The GTO looks for genuine, consistent behaviour that reflects real Officer Like Qualities.
Common Mistakes in GTO Tasks
Behaviours that consistently result in lower assessments
Dominating discussion or interrupting
Talking over others, dismissing ideas, or forcing agreement signals poor interpersonal skill — not leadership. Leadership is about enabling the group, not controlling it.
Staying silent and not participating
Passivity in group tasks is equally harmful. Not contributing ideas, avoiding physical tasks, or waiting for others to lead signals low initiative and low confidence.
Prioritising individual score over teamwork
Candidates who only attempt difficult IO obstacles or hoard the Command Task opportunity ignore the group. GTO observes whether candidates think about the team first.
Giving impractical or unrealistic solutions
In GPE and GD, solutions must be logical and implementable. Suggesting ideas that ignore constraints or resources signals poor judgment and situational awareness.
Not supporting group members
Failing to assist struggling teammates during PGT/HGT, or not encouraging quieter members to contribute in GD, are red flags that assessors specifically look for.
How to Prepare for GTO Tasks
Building genuine skills rather than surface-level tactics
Improve communication and group interaction
Practice group discussions on current affairs, social issues, and defence topics. Focus on making clear points and actively listening to others.
Practice logical problem solving
Solve map-based or scenario-based problems. Practice framing structured plans with constraints — a core skill for GPE.
Work on physical fitness and stamina
Individual Obstacles require agility, strength, and endurance. Build a consistent fitness routine that includes running, climbing, and balance work.
Develop leadership through small activities
Take on organising roles in teams, sports, or events. Real-world experience of leading small groups builds genuine officer-like habits.
Observe and reflect on real scenarios
Study how leaders behave in crisis situations. Read about defence and governance scenarios to build contextual judgment for GPE and Command Task.
