NDA Selection Process 2026 – Complete Stages of NDA Selection
The NDA selection process consists of multiple stages conducted for admission into the National Defence Academy. The process begins with the NDA written examination conducted by UPSC, followed by the SSB interview, psychological tests, group tasks, and medical examination. Candidates who successfully clear all stages are included in the final merit list for training at the National Defence Academy.

What is the NDA Selection Process?
There are two major stages in the NDA selection process: a written test by the UPSC and an SSB interview conducted by the Services Selection Board. The entire selection process is designed to ensure that only the most capable and qualified candidates are admitted to the National Defence Academy.
Candidates must also meet the NDA eligibility criteria, including age limits, educational qualifications, and nationality requirements.
Stage 1: Written Examination
Conducted by UPSC covering Mathematics and General Ability Test. Total 900 marks.
Stage 2: SSB Interview
Candidates who qualify for the written exam are called for the 5-day SSB interview process.
Important: Candidates must clear both stages and pass the medical examination to be eligible for consideration in the final merit list. The final merit is calculated from the combined marks of the written exam and the SSB interview.
NDA Written Examination
The first stage of the NDA selection process is the written examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Candidates must first qualify for the NDA written examination in accordance with the official NDA exam pattern.
The written examination evaluates candidates based on the official NDA syllabus, which includes Mathematics and the General Ability Test. This is an offline pen-and-paper-based exam that tests conceptual understanding and problem-solving abilities.

Candidates who clear the written exam cutoff are called for the SSB interview. The SSB interview carries equal weightage (900 marks) and is conducted over 5 days at various SSB centers across India.
SSB Interview Process
Candidates who qualify for the NDA written examination are invited for the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview. The SSB interview is a five-day process that evaluates candidates on Officer-Like Qualities (OLQs), including leadership, teamwork, effective communication, decision-making, confidence, and responsibility.
The SSB interview is divided into two stages: Stage 1 (Screening Test) conducted on Day 1, and Stage 2 (Detailed Testing) conducted over Days 2–5. Only candidates who clear Stage 1 proceed to Stage 2.

Ability to lead, inspire, and motivate others in challenging situations.

SSB Interview Duration
The complete SSB interview process takes 5 days. Day 1 is the screening test, and candidates who clear it attend the remaining 4 days of detailed testing. Candidates receive their results on Day 5 and are informed whether they have been recommended for entry to the NDA.
SSB Stage 1: Screening Test
The first day of the SSB interview consists of a screening test. It is considered a Mini SSB Process, as it is a micro-combination of the main test, Psychological Tests, Group Testing, and Personal Interview. This stage serves as a filter to identify potential candidates for further evaluation. The Screening Test is divided into two parts:
Officer Intelligence Rating Test (OIR)
In this test, Verbal and Non-Verbal Intelligence Tests are conducted to evaluate reasoning ability, mental alertness, and problem-solving skills. The test contains questions on reasoning, numerical ability, and word associations. The test lasts 30–40 minutes and includes multiple-choice questions.
Duration: Typically 30–40 minutes with MCQs
Picture Perception and Discussion Test (PPDT)
Candidates are shown a hazy picture for 30 seconds. Based on the picture, they identify the number of characters seen and write a story based on their perception. This is followed by a group discussion in which candidates present and discuss their stories in a group of 15.

Screening Result Announcement
Results of the screening test are announced on the same day (Day 1). Candidates who clear the Screening Test proceed to Stage 2 testing. Those who are screened out return home on Day 1 itself.
SSB Stage 2: Detailed Testing
Stage 2 of the SSB interview includes psychological tests, group tasks, and a personal interview conducted over four days (Day 2 to Day 5). These tests comprehensively assess leadership, teamwork, communication, and decision-making abilities essential for an officer.
Psychological Tests
Conducted by the Psychologist to assess personality traits, thought processes, and mental orientation. These tests reveal a candidate’s subconscious mind and natural responses.
Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)
Write stories based on images shown for a few seconds.
Word Association Test (WAT)
Write the first thought that comes to mind for 60 words.
Situation Reaction Test (SRT)
Respond to 60 real-life situations with quick decisions.
Self Description Test (SD)
Write about yourself from different perspectives.
Group Testing Officer (GTO) Tasks
Outdoor tasks conducted by the GTO to assess teamwork, leadership, planning, and execution abilities through practical group activities.
Group Discussion (GD)
Discuss the given topics, showing communication and reasoning.
Group Planning Exercise (GPE)
Analyse situations and propose solutions as a group.
Progressive Group Task (PGT)
Complete progressively difficult physical obstacles as a team.
Individual Obstacles (IO)
Cross 10 obstacles individually within the time limit.
Half Group Task (HGT)
Work with half the group to solve obstacles.
Command Task
Lead a small team as a commander to solve tasks.
Personal Interview
It is conducted by the Interviewing Officer to assess the candidate’s overall personality, knowledge, awareness, interests, and motivation to join the armed forces. The interview is conversational in nature. The interviewing officer is fairly senior and experienced in gauging the candidate’s personality.
Topics Covered: Educational background, family background, current affairs, hobbies, sports, reasons for joining the defence forces, situational questions, and general awareness.
What Do These Tests Assess?
All Stage 2 tests collectively assess Officer Like Qualities (OLQs), including leadership, teamwork, decision-making, communication, planning and organising, social adjustment, and effective intelligence. The assessors observe natural behaviour and consistent patterns across different testing situations.
NDA Medical Examination
Candidates recommended by the SSB interview board are then subjected to an intensive medical examination. The purpose of the medical test is to ensure that the candidate meets the physical and medical standards required for training at NDA and is overall fit to perform the duties of a soldier.
The medical examination is conducted at the designated Military Hospitals. The recommended candidates stay inside the SSB Board for medical examination for 5-7 days. The medical tests ensure that candidates meet all the physical and medical standards as prescribed by the Armed Forces Medical Board for officer training.
The comprehensive medical test checks vision, hearing, physical fitness, and overall health. Candidates must meet specific medical standards as prescribed by the Indian Armed Forces.
Vision Standards
Eyesight requirements, including colour vision and near/distant vision tests.
Physical Fitness
Height, weight, chest measurements, and overall physical assessment.
Overall Health
Complete medical check-up, including cardio, respiratory, and other organ systems.
Hearing Test
Hearing ability tests to ensure candidates meet prescribed standards.
Medical Examination Importance
The medical examination is the final stage before the preparation of the merit list. Even if a candidate clears the written exam and SSB interview, failure to meet medical standards will disqualify them from final selection. It is essential to maintain good physical health throughout the preparation journey.
Medical Categories
Candidates are placed in medical categories based on their fitness level. Different services (Army, Navy, Air Force) may have specific medical requirements. The medical board declares candidates as:

Final Merit List Preparation
The final merit list for NDA admission is prepared based on the combined marks obtained in the written examination and SSB interview. The final merit list is prepared based on the combined marks obtained in the written examination and the SSB interview, for a total of 1800 marks. Only candidates who have cleared both stages and passed the medical examination are considered for the final merit list.
The merit list is prepared separately for the Army, Navy, and Air Force wings based on candidates’ preferences and the number of vacancies available.
