Regional Geography: Asia, Europe, Africa, Americas & Oceania – NDA Geography Notes
Coastal States, Gulfs, Straits, Islands and Maritime Zones of India
Indian Geography • Coastal Geography • PYQs Included
Introduction
Regional geography is the study of specific parts of the world — their physical features, countries, capitals, borders, and distinctive characteristics. This chapter covers all major regions of the world — Asia, Europe, Africa, the Americas, and Oceania.
For NDA, regional geography questions are direct and factual. They ask which country shares a border with another, which mountain range separates two regions, which country is landlocked, what the capital of a country is, or which river flows through a particular city. These questions reward students who have worked seriously with a world map.
The PYQ file shows questions spread across all continents — with Asia (particularly South and Southeast Asia) and Africa getting the most attention. Europe, Americas, and Oceania are tested less frequently but specific facts about European capitals on rivers, Amazon basin, the Great Barrier Reef, and Antarctica appear regularly.
Understand the Topic
Part 1 — Asia
Mountain Ranges:
Caucasus Mountains:
The Caucasus range lies between the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea — separating Europe from Asia in this region. Countries in the Caucasus region include Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan.
The mountain that lies between the Caspian Sea and Black Sea = Caucasus Mountains. [NDA 2020-I | NDA tested via CDS]
Ural Mountains:
The Ural Mountains run north-south through Russia and form the traditional boundary between Europe and Asia.
The mountain range that separates Europe from Asia = Ural Mountains. [NDA tested via CDS]
Himalayan Peaks:
NDA 2011-I matched peaks in Eastern Himalayas — Makalu, Kanchenjunga, Namcha Barwa, and Mt. Everest in their correct positions on the map.
Passes in Asia:
Tawang Pass:
A mountain corridor in Arunachal Pradesh connecting India with China (Tibet). [NDA 2014-I]
Deserts of Asia:
Taklamakan Desert:
Located in the Tarim Basin of Xinjiang in western China — one of the largest shifting sand deserts in the world. It is in Central Asia/China. [NDA 2017-II]
Rivers and Deltas:
Mekong River:
The Mekong Delta is located in Vietnam — the river flows from Tibet through China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and forms its delta in southern Vietnam. [NDA tested via CDS]
Andaman and Nicobar Islands:
Two correct statements about Andaman and Nicobar Islands: [NDA 2010-II]
- Enjoys equatorial climate — TRUE (warm, humid, year-round rainfall)
- Only place in India where a volcano is located — TRUE (Barren Island — India’s only active volcano)
- Only place in India where coral bed is found — FALSE (Lakshadweep also has coral)
Answer: (b) I and II only
Countries and Borders:
Countries between Caspian Sea and Black Sea:
Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan lie between these two seas. Ukraine is NOT between them — it is further northwest. [NDA tested via CDS]
North Korea-South Korea border:
The boundary between North Korea and South Korea is the 38th Parallel. [NDA tested via CDS]
Israel’s neighbours:
Israel has common borders with Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Egypt. Turkey, Cyprus, and Yemen do NOT border Israel. [NDA tested via CDS]
South Asia:
South Asia usually includes: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka — the seven members of SAARC. China, Afghanistan, and Myanmar are NOT typically included in South Asia. [NDA tested via CDS]
Arabian Peninsula:
The Arabian Peninsula includes Saudi Arabia, UAE, Oman, Yemen, Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain. Jordan is NOT part of the Arabian Peninsula — Jordan is in the Levant (eastern Mediterranean region). [NDA tested via CDS]
Jordan:
Jordan was created through the British Mandate system after WWI — TRUE. It is a landlocked country — TRUE. [NDA tested via CDS]
Baltic Nations:
The Baltic states are Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Slovakia is NOT a Baltic nation — it is a Central European landlocked country. [NDA tested via CDS]

Part 3 — Africa
African Countries — Landlocked:
Many African countries are landlocked — having no coastline.
Landlocked African countries include: Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Malawi, Niger, Mali, Chad, Ethiopia (before 1993), South Sudan, Central African Republic, Burkina Faso.
Countries with coastline (NOT landlocked): Nigeria, Angola, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, Cameroon, Ghana, Senegal.
Nigeria is NOT a landlocked country — it has a coastline on the Gulf of Guinea (Atlantic Ocean). [NDA tested via CDS]
Angola is NOT a landlocked country — it has a long Atlantic coastline. [NDA tested via CDS]
Rwanda is located south of the equator — in East Africa. [NDA tested via CDS]
Comoros Islands:
The Comoros Islands in the Indian Ocean (between Madagascar and the African mainland coast) are of volcanic origin. [NDA tested via CDS]
Malawi:
Malawi is a landlocked country in southeastern Africa — formerly called Nyasaland. Its economy is highly dependent on agriculture. [NDA tested via CDS]
Sahel Region:
The Sahel is the semi-arid transitional zone south of the Sahara Desert — stretching from Senegal to Sudan. Desertification is advancing southward — the Sahara is encroaching on the Sahel (the southern moving edge of the Sahara Desert). [NDA 2016-II]
Mountain Gorillas:
Endangered mountain gorillas are found in the Virunga Mountains — a chain of volcanic mountains spanning Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. [NDA tested via CDS]
African Rivers:
- Nile — world’s longest river (debated); drains into Mediterranean through Egypt
- Congo (Zaire) — second longest in Africa; drains into Atlantic
- Zambezi — Victoria Falls; drains into Indian Ocean through Mozambique
Part 4 — North and South America
North American Geography:
Great Lakes:
The five Great Lakes of North America are: Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, Ontario (mnemonic: HOMES).
The line passing through Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, Lake Huron, and Lake Superior represents an internal waterway route to the USA — connecting to the St Lawrence Seaway. [NDA 2009-II]
49th Parallel:
Separates USA from Canada across most of the western border.
South American Geography:
Andes Mountains:
The Andes are the world’s longest continental mountain range — running along the western coast of South America. [NDA 2008-I]
The Andes Mountains are in South America. [NDA 2008-I]
Amazon Basin:
The Amazon Basin is covered by the world’s largest tropical rainforest (Selvas). The Amazon River is the world’s largest river by volume of water.
Tropical rain forests lie in the Amazon Basin. [NDA 2007-I]
South American Grasslands:
- Llanos = Venezuela/Colombia = tropical savanna
- Campos = Brazil = tropical savanna
- Pampas = Argentina = temperate grassland
Cacao/Chocolate:
Hernando Cortez (Cortés) was the first European to encounter the cocoa plant — when he conquered the Aztec Empire in Mexico in the early 16th century. [NDA tested via CDS]
Part 5 — Oceania (Australia, New Zealand, Pacific)
Australia — Key Facts:
Great Barrier Reef:
The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef system — stretching about 2,300 km along the northeastern coast of Queensland, Australia (east Australian coast). [NDA tested via CDS]

The Great Dividing Range does NOT extend from Melbourne to Perth — Perth is on the western coast. The Great Dividing Range runs along the eastern coast only. [NDA tested via CDS]
Pacific Islands Classification:
The Pacific Islands southeast of New Guinea to the Fiji Islands are called Melanesia. [NDA tested via CDS]
- Melanesia = New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji, New Caledonia (southwest Pacific)
- Polynesia = Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, New Zealand (eastern Pacific)
- Micronesia = Guam, Marshall Islands, Caroline Islands (north Pacific)
Part 6 — Antarctica
Antarctica — Key Facts:
Antarctica has the highest average elevation of all continents — approximately 2,300 m above sea level due to the thick ice sheet. [NDA tested via CDS]
The highest peak in Antarctica is Mount Vinson (4,892 m) — NOT Mount Ross. [NDA tested via CDS]
Both statements correct: [NDA tested via CDS]
- Antarctica has highest average elevation of all continents — TRUE
- Mount Vinson is the highest peak — TRUE
The waters of the Southern Ocean (West Wind Drift) move in an anticlockwise direction around Antarctica — when viewed from above the South Pole, the eastward-flowing current appears anticlockwise. [NDA tested via CDS]
Antarctica is larger than Europe — approximately 14 million km² vs Europe’s 10 million km². [NDA tested via CDS]
India’s Antarctic Stations:
- Dakshin Gangotri = India’s FIRST station in Antarctica

Common Mistakes
- Students say the Caucasus Mountains separate Europe from Asia in central Russia. The Ural Mountains separate Europe from Asia in Russia. The Caucasus lie between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea — they form the boundary in the southern part of Russia’s European-Asian divide.
- Students say the North Korea-South Korea border is the 49th Parallel. The 49th Parallel separates the USA and Canada. The 38th Parallel separates North and South Korea.
- Students say the Great Dividing Range extends to Perth. The Great Dividing Range runs along the eastern coast of Australia (north-south). Perth is on the western coast — the Great Dividing Range does not reach there.
- Students confuse Melanesia (New Guinea to Fiji, southwestern Pacific) with Polynesia (Hawaii, Samoa, New Zealand, eastern Pacific) and Micronesia (northern Pacific). Melanesia = dark islands; Polynesia = many islands; Micronesia = small islands.
- Students say Antarctica’s Southern Ocean moves clockwise. Viewed from above the South Pole, the eastward-moving Antarctic Circumpolar Current appears anticlockwise.
- Students say Nigeria is landlocked. Nigeria has a coastline on the Gulf of Guinea (Atlantic Ocean).
- Students confuse Jordan (landlocked, Middle East) with Lebanon (has Mediterranean coastline). Jordan is landlocked; Lebanon has a coastline.
- Students say South Asia includes China. South Asia (SAARC) = Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka. China is NOT part of South Asia.
- Students say Mount Ross is the highest peak in Antarctica. The highest peak is Mount Vinson. Mount Ross is a different peak in the subantarctic Kerguelen Islands.
