Introduction
The Earth’s land surface is covered by a remarkable variety of plant life — from the dense, towering rainforests of the Amazon to the sparse, barely visible mosses of the Arctic tundra. This pattern of vegetation is not random. It is a direct response to climate — particularly temperature and rainfall. Where it is hot and wet year-round, dense forest grows. Where it is hot and dry, desert plants survive. Where it is cold and dark for most of the year, only low-growing mosses and lichens manage.
This chapter organises the world’s vegetation into biomes — large geographical areas characterised by a specific type of climate and the characteristic plant and animal communities adapted to that climate.

The Relationship Between Climate and Vegetation
The type of vegetation in any region is determined primarily by:
Temperature — plants need warmth to grow. High year-round temperatures support dense, tall forests. Very cold temperatures support only low-growing plants.
Rainfall and moisture — heavy year-round rainfall supports dense forests. Seasonal rainfall supports grasslands and deciduous forests. Very little rainfall supports desert scrub or bare ground.
Season length — short growing seasons limit what can grow. In polar regions, plants must complete their entire growth cycle in just a few weeks.
Soil — the type of soil influences what plants can grow, though soil itself is partly a product of the vegetation and climate above it.
Biomes — From Equator to Pole
Moving from the equator toward the poles, you pass through a series of biomes that mirror the change in climate:
Tropical Rainforest → Tropical Grassland (Savanna) → Hot Desert → Mediterranean Scrubland → Temperate Grassland → Temperate Deciduous Forest → Boreal Forest (Taiga) → Tundra → Ice Desert
1. Tropical Rainforest (Selvas)
Location: Equatorial zone — Amazon Basin (South America), Congo Basin (Africa), Southeast Asian islands (Borneo, Sumatra, New Guinea).
Climate: Hot and humid throughout the year. Heavy convectional rainfall almost every afternoon.
Characteristics:
- Dense, multi-layered forest with emergent trees reaching 50–60 m, canopy at 25–35 m, and understory below
- Evergreen — trees do not shed leaves seasonally because there is no dry season
- Enormous biodiversity — more species per square kilometre than any other biome
Characteristic vegetation:
- Epiphytes — plants that grow on other plants for physical support but are not parasitic — orchids, bromeliads, ferns clinging to tree branches
- Lianas — woody climbing vines
- Buttress roots — wide flaring roots at the base of tall trees to provide support in thin tropical soil

3. Hot Desert Vegetation (Xerophytes)
Location: Subtropical desert zones — Sahara, Arabian Desert, Thar, Atacama, Australian Desert.
Characteristic vegetation: Xerophytes — plants adapted to survive in extreme drought.
Xerophyte adaptations:
- Deep roots to reach underground water, or very shallow spreading roots to collect any surface moisture
- Thick, waxy leaves to reduce water loss
- Leaves modified into thorns or spines to reduce surface area
- Stem stores water (succulent plants like cacti)
- Seeds that remain dormant for years and germinate after rare rain

4. Mediterranean Scrubland (Chaparral/Maquis)
Location: Mediterranean climate zones — Mediterranean basin, California, central Chile, southwestern Australia, southwestern South Africa.

6. Temperate Deciduous Forest
Location: Eastern USA, Western and Central Europe, northeastern China, Japan, southeastern Australia.
Characteristics:
- Broad-leaved trees that shed leaves in autumn (deciduous)
- Four distinct seasons
- Moderate rainfall distributed throughout the year
- Rich, fertile soils from leaf litter decomposition
- Trees: oak, beech, maple, elm, birch, hickory

- Very short growing season (less than 2 months above 0°C)
- Permafrost — permanently frozen subsoil that prevents tree root growth

Timber Vegetation
Timber vegetation is generally NOT found in tundra regions — tundra is treeless. Subtropical, temperate, and alpine regions all have timber trees.

Common Mistakes
- Students confuse Campos (tropical savanna, Brazil) with Pampas (temperate grassland, Argentina). Both are in South America but in completely different climate zones. Campos = tropical. Pampas = temperate.
- Students say Llanos is in Brazil. Llanos = Venezuela and Colombia. Brazil has Campos. NDA tested both.
- Students confuse Veld (South Africa) with Downs (Australia). Both are temperate grasslands on different continents. Veld = South Africa. Downs = Australia.
- Students say tropical rainforest soil is very fertile. It is nutrient-poor — nutrients are quickly absorbed by dense vegetation. When a forest is cleared, the soil becomes infertile within a few years. NDA tested this as a false statement.
- Students say tundra is treeless because it is too cold. The correct reason is that permafrost prevents root growth — not simply cold temperatures. NDA 2011-I tested this specific explanation.
- Students confuse sclerophyll (Mediterranean — hard waxy leaves) with xerophyte (desert). Both are drought-adapted, but sclerophyll is specifically for the Mediterranean climate (mild wet winter; hot dry summer). Xerophyte is for true desert (almost no rainfall).
- Students say spruce and cedar are deciduous trees. Spruce and cedar are coniferous — needle-leaved, evergreen trees of the taiga. They do not shed leaves in autumn.
- Students confuse epiphyte (grows on other plant — NOT parasitic) with parasite. Epiphytes use hosts only for physical support. Orchids on tree branches are epiphytes, not parasites.
