Coastal States, Gulfs, Straits, Islands and Maritime Zones of India
Indian Geography • Coastal Geography • PYQs Included
Introduction
Transport connects people, markets, and resources. Without good roads, railways, ports, and airports, economic development cannot happen. India has one of the largest transport networks in the world — in total road length, railway track, and number of ports.
NDA tests this chapter through National Highway numbers and their routes, the Golden Quadrilateral, railway zone headquarters, National Waterways, major ports and their special features, and government transport schemes.
This chapter has direct factual questions — either you know the facts or you do not. Working carefully with a map of India’s transport network is the best way to prepare.
Understand the Topic
Road Transport
Roads are the most common form of transport in India. They connect villages, towns, and cities. India has one of the longest road networks in the world.
Types of Roads:
- National Highways (NH) — connect major cities; maintained by central government
- State Highways — connect state capitals and important cities within states
- District Roads — connect district headquarters
- Village Roads — connect villages to market towns
Largest concentration of roads in India = Northern Plains. [NDA 2010-II]
Ratio of surfaced road to total road length is LOWER in the Northern Plains — TRUE. Despite having the most roads, many village roads in the plains are still unmetalled. [NDA 2010-II]
Both statements (1 and 2) about Indian roads are correct. [NDA 2010-II]
Maharashtra has the maximum share of national highways in India — TRUE. The terrain is relatively flat and the state is highly developed economically. [NDA 2022-II]
National Highways
Important National Highways (Old Numbering System — still tested in NDA):
| NH | Route | Key Cities |
|---|---|---|
| NH 1 | Delhi to Attari (Pakistan border) | Amritsar |
| NH 2 | Delhi to Kolkata | Agra, Varanasi, Dhanbad |
| NH 4 | Mumbai to Chennai | Pune, Belgaum, Bangalore |
| NH 5 | Kolkata to Chennai (via Odisha coast) | Bhubaneswar, Chennai |
| NH 6 | Hazira (Gujarat) to Kolkata | Nagpur, Raipur, Sambalpur |
| NH 7 | Varanasi to Kanyakumari | Nagpur, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Madurai |
| NH 8 | Delhi to Mumbai | Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Vadodara |
| NH 9 | Pune to Hyderabad | — |
| NH 12 | Jabalpur to Jaipur | Bhopal |
NH 7 connects Varanasi to Kanyakumari — passing through Nagpur, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Madurai. It is the longest NH in India under the old system. [NDA 2006-II | NDA 2008-I]
NH 7 connects Delhi and Kanyakumari — NO. NH 7 connects Varanasi to Kanyakumari. Delhi to Kanyakumari is NOT the route. [NDA 2008-I]
NH 8 connects Delhi and Mumbai. [NDA 2007-II]
NH 5 connects Bhubaneswar to Chennai (Kolkata-Chennai route). [NDA 2007-I]
NH 7 links Jabalpur, Nagpur, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Madurai. [NDA 2006-II]
NH 12 connects Bhopal and Jaipur. [NDA 2007-I]
NH 9 connects Pune and Hyderabad. [NDA 2007-I]
NHs 6 and 7 cross each other at a city — which city? The PYQ asks this without giving a confirmed answer visible in our file. Based on standard knowledge, NH 6 passes through Nagpur and NH 7 also passes through Nagpur — they cross at Nagpur/Rourkela area — the PYQ options include Coimbatore, Koraput, Ranchi, Rourkela. [NDA 2006-I]
Golden Quadrilateral
The Golden Quadrilateral is India’s most important highway project. It connects four major cities:
Delhi — Mumbai — Chennai — Kolkata
It forms a rough quadrilateral shape across India.
The Golden Quadrilateral passes through:
- Delhi-Mumbai section: Jaipur, Vadodara, Pune — passes through Vadodara-Pune-Visakhapatnam-Varanasi? Let me check PYQ: answer is (c) Vadodara-Pune-Visakhapatnam-Varanasi. [NDA 2013-I]
Longest section of the Golden Quadrilateral = Kolkata-Chennai. [NDA 2017-I]
The Golden Quadrilateral connects Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata — NOT Bengaluru. Statement “connects Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata” is WRONG. [NDA tested via CDS]
North-South and East-West Corridors
North-South Corridor: Connects Srinagar (J&K) to Kanyakumari (Tamil Nadu).
East-West Corridor: Connects Silchar (Assam) to Porbandar (Gujarat).
The North-South and East-West corridors cross each other at Jhansi (UP). [NDA 2023-II]
However, one CDS PYQ says the East-West corridor (Silchar to Porbandar) and North-South corridor (Srinagar to Kanyakumari) intersect at Nagpur. [NDA tested via CDS]
Note: There is an apparent inconsistency between NDA 2023-II (Jhansi) and CDS 2008-II (Nagpur). The NDA answer is Jhansi — follow this for NDA. [NDA 2023-II]
The North-South corridor passes through Hyderabad — TRUE. [NDA tested via CDS]
Bharatmala Project
Bharatmala Pariyojana is related to improvement of road connectivity / networks of National Highways in India. It is a highway development programme. [NDA 2018-I | NDA 2021-I]
It is NOT about interlinking rivers, interlinking cities with railways, or gas pipelines.
Atal Tunnel
The Atal Tunnel (formerly Rohtang Tunnel) reduced the distance between Manali and Leh. [NDA tested via CDS]
It passes under the Rohtang Pass and connects the Kullu Valley (Manali) to the Lahaul-Spiti district — and onward to Leh. This tunnel keeps Lahaul-Spiti accessible even in winter when the Rohtang Pass is closed by snow.
Railway Transport
India has one of the largest railway networks in the world — about 68,000 km of track.
Railway Zone Headquarters:
| Zone | Headquarters |
|---|---|
| Northern | Delhi |
| North-Eastern | Gorakhpur [NDA tested via CDS] |
| North-East Frontier | Guwahati/Maligaon |
| Eastern | Kolkata |
| South-Eastern | Kolkata (Headquarters = Kolkata, NOT Bhubaneswar) |
| South-East Central | Bilaspur |
| South | Chennai |
| South-Central | Secunderabad |
| South-Western | Hubli |
| Western | Mumbai |
| Central | Mumbai (NOT Jabalpur) [NDA tested via CDS] |
| North-Western | Jaipur |
| East-Coast | Bhubaneswar |
Central Railway HQ is at Mumbai — NOT Jabalpur. Statement “Central: Jabalpur” is WRONG. [NDA tested via CDS]
North-Eastern Railway HQ = Gorakhpur. [NDA tested via CDS]
South-Western Railway HQ = Hubli. [NDA tested via CDS]
Railway Zone Matching [NDA tested via CDS]:
- South-Eastern = Kolkata (2)
- South-Central = Secunderabad (1)
- South-Western = Hubli (4)
- South-East Central = Bilaspur (3)
Improvements in Indian Railways in recent years: Gauge conversion, track electrification, and automatic signals — all three have taken place. [NDA 2017-II]
Rajdhani train covering longest distance = Dibrugarh Town Rajdhani (2435/2436). [NDA tested via CDS]
Northeast state capitals connected by railways: Among Imphal, Agartala, Kohima, and Aizawl — only Agartala (Tripura) is connected by railway. [NDA tested via CDS]
Water Transport — National Waterways
India has a long history of inland water transport. The National Waterways Act, 2016 declared 111 waterways as National Waterways. [NDA 2022-II]
India has one of the longest navigable inland water networks in the world — TRUE.
Inland waterways presently transport about 25% of total cargo — FALSE. Inland waterways carry much less than 25% of cargo. Statement 2 is incorrect. [NDA 2022-II]
Major National Waterways:
| NW Number | Route | River |
|---|---|---|
| NW 1 | Allahabad (Prayagraj) to Haldia | Ganga-Bhagirathi-Hooghly |
| NW 2 | Sadiya to Dhubri | Brahmaputra [NDA tested via CDS] |
| NW 3 | Kottapuram to Kollam | West Coast Canal, Kerala |
| NW 4 | Godavari-Krishna | AP |
NW 1 = Allahabad-Haldia stretch on the Ganga. [NDA 2010-II]
NW 2 = Sadiya-Dhubri stretch on the Brahmaputra. [NDA 2010-II | NDA tested via CDS]
The Sadiya-Dhubri stretch of the Brahmaputra is the longest national waterway. [NDA 2008-I]
Palk Strait is too shallow for large ships — ships going from Chennai to Kochi must go around Sri Lanka because the Palk Strait is too shallow. [NDA tested via CDS]
Headquarters of Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) = Noida. [NDA tested via CDS]
National Inland Navigation Institute = Kolkata. [NDA tested via CDS]
First National Inland Waterway = Haldia to Allahabad (NW 1) on the Ganga. [NDA tested via CDS]
Sea Transport — Major Ports of India
India has 12 major ports (now 13 with addition) and about 200 non-minor/intermediate ports. [NDA tested via CDS]
95% of India’s trade by volume is moved by sea. [NDA tested via CDS]
Tamil Nadu has more than two major ports — Chennai (Madras), Tuticorin (VOC Port), and Kamarajar (Ennore). [NDA tested via CDS]
Major Ports of India:
| Port | State | Side | Special Feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deendayal Port (Kandla) | Gujarat | West | Tidal port; on Gulf of Kutch [NDA 2020-I] |
| Mumbai | Maharashtra | West | Largest and busiest port; natural harbour |
| JNPT (Nhava Sheva) | Maharashtra | West | India’s largest container port |
| Mormugao | Goa | West | Iron ore exports to Japan; natural harbour |
| New Mangalore | Karnataka | West | — |
| Kochi (Cochin) | Kerala | West | Queen of the Arabian Sea; Willingdon Island |
| Chennai | Tamil Nadu | East | Oldest port on eastern coast; artificial harbour |
| Kamarajar (Ennore) | Tamil Nadu | East | Handles thermal coal; commissioned 2001 [NDA 2019-I] |
| V.O. Chidambaranar (Tuticorin) | Tamil Nadu | East | — |
| Visakhapatnam | Andhra Pradesh | East | Deepest landlocked protected port |
| Paradeep | Odisha | East | In Mahanadi delta; major iron ore export **[NDA 2008-I |
| Haldia | West Bengal | East | Port for Kolkata; river port |
| Kolkata | West Bengal | East | Inland riverine port; on Hooghly River |
Port-Special Feature Matching [NDA 2012-I]:
- Kandla = Tidal port (3)
- Kochi = Located at mouth of lagoon (2)
- Vishakhapatnam = Deepest landlocked protected port (1)
- Kolkata = Inland riverine port (4)
Port-Location Matching [NDA 2018-I]:
- Kolkata = On the riverside (3)
- Mormugao = On the entrance of estuary (4) — Goa port
- Visakhapatnam = Landlocked area (1)
- Paradip = In the delta region (2)
Port-Feature Matching [NDA 2021-II]:
- Mumbai = Biggest port of India (2)
- Visakhapatnam = Landlocked harbour (3)
- Chennai = Oldest port on the eastern coast (4)
- Kochi = Queen of the Arabian Sea (1)
Visakhapatnam is a land-locked harbour — TRUE. [NDA 2021-II | NDA tested via CDS]
Deendayal Port (formerly Kandla) is a tidal port — TRUE. It is located in the Gulf of Kutch where tidal range is high. [NDA 2020-I | NDA tested via CDS]
Visakhapatnam Port is NOT a landlocked harbour — wait. Actually, Visakhapatnam IS described as the deepest landlocked protected port — meaning it is protected by natural hills on three sides, creating a land-locked harbour setting. [NDA 2021-II]
CDS 2023-I PYQ: Statement “Visakhapatnam Port is a land-locked harbour” = TRUE; Statement “Deendayal Port is a tidal port” = TRUE. But answer = (b) 2 only — meaning only statement 2 is correct. This suggests the Visakhapatnam description needs care. Follow NDA 2021-II which confirms Visakhapatnam = landlocked harbour.
Kandla Port is situated at the head of Gulf of Kutch (NOT Gulf of Khambhat). [NDA 2008-I]
Paradeep Port is situated in the Mahanadi Delta (Odisha). [NDA 2008-I]
Both statements in NDA 2008-I are: Kandla is at Gulf of Khambhat (1 = WRONG — it is Gulf of Kutch), Paradeep is in Mahanadi Delta (2 = correct). Answer = Only 2. [NDA 2008-I]
Major item of export from Paradeep Port = Iron Ore. [NDA 2008-I]
Iron ore from Kudremukh is exported through Mormugao Port (Goa) — not through Odisha ports. [NDA 2010-II] Wait — the PYQ gives Kudremukh iron ore export through which port? Kudremukh is in Karnataka and would logically export through New Mangalore or Mormugao. The PYQ options are Orissa, Tripura, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan — which are not ports. This question may be about a different topic or the answer needs rechecking.
Diamond Harbour is NOT a seaport — it is a town on the Hooghly River in West Bengal, used for inland navigation but not a major seaport. [NDA 2015-II]
Mormugao gained significance for handling iron-ore exports to Japan. [NDA tested via CDS]
Sequence of ports from North to South [NDA 2011-I]:
Kandla → Haldia → Paradeep → Kochi. [NDA 2011-I]
Sequence of Kerala ports from South to North [NDA tested via CDS]:
